Out of the Past Into the Future

No study of our Canadian history can be complete without acknowledging the roles and contributions Black Canadians have made over many years. Through slavery, oppression, racism, and forced movement, African Canadians have continued to make progress in the hope for equality. Canadian school texts and teaching information are admittedly lacking, and what is available tends to be designed for older age groups -- beyond the time when images have had their most damaging effect. It is our hope that learning about the exploits and achievements of Black Canadians in ways that are fun can promote a greater understanding and develop positive relationships between students of all backgrounds. The intent of this book is to provide study areas that will stimulate the minds of the young to dig deeper and explore for even more information. Individuals have been highlighted for the long-term effect their efforts have had on Black Canadians. Many others have played equally prominent roles, and we respectfully honour their contributions.
