In 1846 the government called 17 chiefs from all the Native reservations across Ontario to Orillia for a Great Meeting. The Chiefs were almost unanimous in their support of the government agent's new plan to "save" the natives - but the two chiefs local to Orillia adamantly refused to go along. Chief Yellowhead of Rama and Chief Aisance of Coldwater succeeded in kiboshing the proposal to move all the Natives to one big reserve on the Bruce Penninsula, but could not stop the creation of Canada's first residential schools. The two schools created were deemed abject failures after only five years and were closed, proving the rebel Chiefs correct in their assessment. This long forgotten story, that happened right here in Orillia, hinges on the characters of those two Chiefs, and this book explores their backgrounds and then the debates at the great Meeting.
